In 2001, hands-on computer courses were developed for teachers seeking to acquire skills to
effectively integrate technology into the K-12
curriculum. What began as six different
workshops held in the computer labs at St. John
Fisher has developed over the last eight
years into a library of over 60
different workshops designed to meet the learning needs of
teachers from preschool through high school and across all curricular areas. What began as a
method to gain technological skills evolved into a variety of workshops that include technology
integration but also address the language arts curriculum,
meeting the needs of special
learners, assessment, and the standards-aligned curriculum.
In 2008, ten schools on Chicago's southwest side developed, with the assistance of the Office
of Catholic Schools, an online learning center to
meet the diverse needs of teachers seeking
professional development
opportunities and to share their expertise in a variety of areas, and
accommodate the
busy schedules of teachers. Initiated on an experimental basis, the program
was well-received and expanded throughout the City and suburbs during the
summer of 2009.
At the current time, all coursework, both face-to-face and online, is
available to all Illinois
teachers, school staff and administration, using both PC and
MAC platforms.
